C S Lewis was one of the twentieth centuries best teachers of the Christian Faith. His bestselling book, Mere Christianity, is still available today and we’ll use it as a basis for this study series.
Session 1. Introducing C S Lewis and the context of the book, which began as a series of radio broadcasts in World War II.
Session 2. “The Rival Conceptions of God.” Can there be such a thing as multiple truths? What is pantheism and what does it mean that we are monotheists? How does suffering affect our understanding of God?
Session 3. “The Invasion.” Christianity isn’t necessarily logical. Dualism teaches that good and evil are equal and opposite forces but our experience teaches us that this isn’t enough to understand how the world was created.
Session 4. “The Shocking Alternative.” We’re made free, which is a wonderful and also causes a lot of problems. God saves us by being incarnate for us, being born in the world.
Session 5. “Perfectly Penitent.” What was happening when Jesus died on the Cross? How do we say sorry for our sins?
Session 6. “The Practical Conclusion.” How baptism, faith and Holy Communion nourish the Christian as we prepare for Christ’s return.
Session 7. A conclusion to draw together what we’ve learnt and anything more we’d like to know. How does C.S. Lewis continue with the rest of the book?
You may wish to buy the book, Mere Christianity, but there is no need to.
